Welcome to another fantastic and exciting week of 5th grade! Below is an update on what we are working on in the "Kourt Room" and a couple special activities we are taking part in:
Nature's Classroom:
It is hard to believe we leave for Natures Classroom in less than a month. Please remember to hand in all Natures Classroom forms and all money in to me by Friday. Natures Classroom needs the paperwork several days before our trip. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. We appreciate your support on this once and a life time experience for your child. This Glenmont tradition is one your child will talk about for years to come!
Read-a-thon for Project Playground:
Last Thursday we had a kick off assembly to discuss our upcoming read-a-thon at Genmont School. We encourage each child to take part in this exciting reading project. As a school and class we want to see how many minutes we can read at home. The actual read-a-thon will begin this Friday, October 4th and goes until Thursday, October 10th. As you know we are also collecting pledges as we read. A couple children asked if they need to collect pledges to take part, the answer is no. We want all of the children to read, read, read! If you have seen our playground lately you will understand why we are coming together to build a new community playground. All pledges and money collected will go to our new playground. We are hoping the new playground will be in this upcoming summer! We appreciate your support towards this community project. The children should spend this week asking close family and friends to sponsor them during our upcoming read-a-thon. Reading will begin on Friday!!
Reading Update:
The children have learned our reading workshop routine and procedures. Our program is up and running!! Last week the children received their reading partner. At the end of reading workshop the children will have an opportunity to meet with their reading partner to have an authentic reading conversation. Reading conversations are a very important part of true comprehension of books. They will have an opportunity to talk about reading strategies together, share favorite parts in books, recommend books to one another, and ask each other questions. This is always a favorite part of our reading workshop routine. For the next couple weeks the children will learn about summarizing and how to summarize as they read. A good summary is a great indication on whether or not a child comprehends what he or she reads!
Writing Update:
The children have been very busy writing personal narrative entries in their writer's notebook. I have been very impressed with the children's significant small moments. We are working on making our writing better and more detailed. It is their responsibility to bring their audience into the small moment by giving enough detail that their reader feels like they are part of it. We will continue to work on the craft of writing great small moment entries. Eventually the children will choose a couple small moments and bring them through the writer's workshop process, and eventual publish a personal narrative piece!
In social studies the children are working on a map and geography unit. Last week the children learned about latitude and longitude. This week we are going to focus on geography terms.
Have a great week and thank you for your support!
Andrew
