We are excited for another great week of 5th grade! Below are a couple things to look forward to this week in "The Kourt Room:"
Learning Luncheon:
Don't forget about our first learning luncheon on Wednesday during the children's recess and lunch times. During this time the children will share their published writing piece, discuss our character writing unit, and much more. Please remember to bring a special lunch for you and your child to share -we hope to see you there.
Parent Conferences:
Tuesday is our last conference day. I will be conferencing with parents all day on Tuesday since we missed a conference day due to Natures Classroom. The children will still have a half day and will be dismissed at 11:45. I look forward to meeting with the rest of you on Tuesday.
Natures Classroom:
We had a fantastic trip to Natures Classroom last week. The children made memories that they will never forget. This trip could not have been as successful without your support. I also want to thank everyone that contributed to the dinner that was waiting for me upon my return to school on Wednesday. My family and I enjoyed the delicious meal. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
Writing Update:
Last week the children published their first writing piece - personal narrative. I brought them through the process of writing a narrative piece throughout writing workshop. This week the children will begin writing another personal narrative piece. This time I will provide them with less support, they are expected to use what I taught them and write another piece more independently. The children will choose a topic and start bringing their piece through the writing process.
In reading we are starting a character for meaning unit. In this unit the children will use textual evidence, prior knowledge, inferring, synthesizing, envisioning, and interpreting, to understand the characters they read in different books, articles, and short stories. Without characters there is not much of a story. By understanding characters well will help children comprehend what they are reading better. The children will of course work in reading workshop where they will read their independent books.
We will start switching for science this week. The children will join Mrs. Aupperle for our crayfish unit in science. We will switch on Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for the next several weeks.
Have a great week!
