Natures Classroom Here We Come!!

It is hard to believe a week from today we will be at Natures Classroom.  We are leaving next Monday, October 21st.  The children will need a ride to school next Monday morning for around 8:15am.  The buses will leave at 8:30am sharp.  We will return back from Natures Classroom Wednesday, October 23rd, for around 2:30pm.  The children will have to be picked up from school for around 2:30pm.  All 5th graders will be dismissed as soon as we return back to school.  Be sure to make arrangements for your child to go home early next Wednesday.  It is important that the children have everything on the packing list that was handed out at open house.  I will send another copy of the packing list home sometime this week in case you need another copy.  I want to thank you again for your support with this once and a lifetime trip for your child!  Let me know if you have any questions.

This week is our student teacher, Ms. Tucker's last week working with us.  We are going to have a small goodbye and good luck party for her on Friday.  I am asking each child/family to bring in a school supply for her.  I will collect all the supplies and make a basket from the children for her to use in her future classroom.  The children will also create a good luck card for her this week.  Each child will bring home a piece of paper home to create a card.  All cards should be back to school by Thursday.

Thursday is our first parent teacher conference day of the school year.  The children will be dismissed at 11:45am.  I look forward to meeting with many of you on Thursday.  Our next and last conference day is Tuesday, October 29th (all day.)

In reading the children are finishing up our summarizing unit.  This week we will begin our character for meaning unit.  In this unit we will study characters to help us infer, synthesize, and deeply understand what we read.  We will of course continue reading workshop where the children will read independently, post their thinking, respond to literature, and meet with their reading partners.

In writing the children are continuing to work on their personal narrative writing piece.  Each day I am teaching the children a revision technique.  This technique will make their writing piece better, more detailed, and descriptive. We will eventually publish this piece and then the children will independently write one last personal narrative piece.

The children have a geography social studies test tomorrow.  This test is everything Ms. Tucker taught them in social studies: map skills, hemispheres, latitude/longitude, map scales, etc.  The children received their "Make Believe Map Project" outline.  The entire project is due in mid November. We will start science after Natures Classroom.

Let me know if you  have any questions.  Have a great week!

Mr. Kourt
