Welcome To A Great Week!!

We have another exciting week planned in "The Kourt Room!!"  This week we have our Holiday buddy feast with our buddy class, Mrs. Klugman's first grade.  This is a yearly tradition between our two classes.  I want to thank all of you who donated to bring in food for our feast.  I ask that you bring all donated food and supplies to school by this Wednesday, this will give us time to prepare any food ahead of time (unless you are bringing prepared food.)  For any families who are volunteering at our feast look for a volunteer confirmation within the next couple days! This will be an event the children will never forget!

Happy American Education Week!!  As a 5th grade we decided to celebrate this special week by inviting parents into our math classrooms.  My math class families are invited to my math class on Thursday 11:15 - 12:00, Mrs. Aupperle's class is invited to her class also on Thursday, 11:15 - 12:00, and Ms. Longton's math class families are invited to her class on Wednesday 11:15 - 12:00.  We hope you are able to make these special visits!

A couple reminders:  As a class we are collecting jam and/or jelly for our holiday food drive.  Please send these in as soon as possible!  It is hard to believe we are already getting ready for this spring's yearbook.  All baby photos are due to Mrs. Lauricella as soon as possible.  If your child wants to design a yearbook cover they are due by Wednesday.

Reading Update:
The children are doing some amazing thinking as they read.  Our current unit focuses on character.  Without characters in books it would be impossible to have a story.  When the children are able to understand what they read better when they focus on teh book's character.  The children have been inferring, analyzing, comparing, and snthesizing the characters in the stories they read.  throughout teh past couple week we have been studying characters in short stories.  The children have studied character change, character traits, and answered critically thinking questions about characters.  This week the children are going to compare and contrast different characters.  We are of course working in reading workshop where the children are reading their independent books.

Writing Update:
I have been very impressed with the children's progress and dedication to their writing.  The children are currently drafting their second personal narrative writing piece.  As teh children are drafting tehir pieces they are also revising their work.  The children have worked hard to use internal thinking, conversation, and description in their writing.  It is their goal to mae sure their readers feel like they are in taking part in the small moment they are writing about.  Over the last few weeks each child has made amazing gains in their writing.  We can's wait to share and celebrate our published pieces at next Monday's learning luncheon.  We hope to see you at our November Learning Luncheon on Monday, November 25th.

We will have spelling this week.  The children will be tested on their spelling and vocab words on Friday.

Have a great week and thank you for your support!!
