Welcome to another week of 5th grade! It is hard to believe the holiday season is upon us. To celebrate the holiday season we have a couple special activities planned.
- On Tuesday, December 17th the 5th grade is going Christmas caroling after school. For all who are
interested we are meeting at the Selkirk Fire Department at 7pm and plan on going caroling
throughout the neighborhood behind the fire hall. This is not a drop off activity - all family members
are invited. (we sent a permission slip home with more detail on Friday)
- On Wednesday, December 18th - we will make holiday houses in class. Please send in $3.00 for
materials as soon as possible (a note went home on Friday with more details.)
- Thursday, December 19th is our December learning luncheon - 12:05 - 12:55 - all family and friends
are invited - please bring your lunch. Together we will make a winter craft and share everything
we have been working on.
- On Friday, December 20th we are having our winter celebration - thank you for all of your donations!
These events are sure to get everyone in the holiday spirit!!!
We recently started a new writing unit called argumentative essay. Last week we discussed the characteristics of an essay. We practiced this by writing 2 essays in class with the following claim or thesis statements: "I love Ice Cream" and "Sports Are Important For Children." Writing these essays focused on essay format and ensured that the children understand how to write an essay. Now that the children understand how to write essays this week we are going to work on the argumentative and research aspect. The children are going to be given topics in which they will need to research both arguments and then write an essay presenting both claims. This week the children will work on the topic, "Whether or not chocolate milk should be served in school cafeterias." This is a writing unit that the children are guaranteed to enjoy!
In reading, we continue to work on author's purpose in the stories and books we read. Finding the author's purpose is a very tricky reading strategy. In order to find the author's purpose a reader has to infer and be able to back their claim up with evidence from the story. We will continue to practice this concept in class. Throughout the week we will continue to work in reading workshop where the children are reading independently.
We will have spelling and vocab this week. The children will have a spelling and vocabulary quiz on Friday. This week we are starting our United States history unit. I will teach the children the big events throughout America's history from Native Americans to the Cold War. Last week the children finished up their crayfish science unit with Mrs. Aupperle.
Have a great week!!
