A Busy Week Ahead…..
We have an exciting week planned in "The Kourt Room!" We have a couple special activities coming up this week: On Monday we will have a green celebration and Wednesday & Thursday the children have a district choir practice at the High School. Below is an overview of what we are working on this week:
Reading:
In reading, we are working on answering multiple choice type reading questions. The children are given a reading passage at the 5th grade reading level and are asked to answer a couple multiple choice type questions. We have discussed that in order to do well on this type of reading, the children must read the passage carefully, closely, and deliberately. Reading short answers and answering detailed questions is very different than reading a just right book for enjoyment. Together we have brainstormed strategies on how to be successful answering these type of questions. I am very proud of the children's growth and development on this type of reading. This unit will help the children be more successful on the upcoming ELA assessment. Look for a copy of these strategies to review at home with your child.
This week we will discuss and practice short response type questioning. Look for strategies and tips on how to best answer short answer the questions coming let this week!
The children are of course working in reading workshop where they are reading their literature circle books, independent books, responding to literature, and discussing and meeting about books with their peers.
Writing:
A couple weeks ago we completed are argumentative essay writing unit. We are now working on a unit called literary essay. In this writing unit the children are reading pieces of authentic literature and are then writing an essay based upon a specific task or comprehension questions. The children are and will be writing essays based upon character, theme, author's purpose, and craft. The children are currently finishing up their second character essay. In this essay they had to read two stories, compare and contrast 2 character from both stories, and write a well organized essay. This week we will work on theme. The children will read more short stories and write an essay based upon the theme of the stories. This type of writing is similar to what is asked on the upcoming ELA.
ELA Assessments:
Look for a note coming home on Monday regarding upcoming ELA and math assessments. Later in the week, I will also send home some strategies that will help the children on the ELA. I am asking you to review these with your child, sign the slip, and send the slip back to school - it is important that I know that the children reviewed this important information with you.
Social Studies:
At home, your child should be working on their United States history 3-sided display project. I have been light on homework the past couple weeks so that the children would have plenty of time to work on this project at home. Please let m know if you have any questions regarding this project. I will send home a grading rubric home with the children sometime this week. The entire project us due March 28th.
In social studies we have been focusing on Westward Expansion. We will continue this mini unit throughout the next couple weeks.
Thank you for your continued support and never hesitate to contact me with any questions. I appreciate your well wishes throughout the last couple weeks. Eli and my wife are doing great. My daughter Ava loves having a little bother at home.
Have a great week!
Andrew
